88.IV is the latest work by composer and sound artist Marcus Herne, made in celebration of PIANO DAY 2024

“Why does the world need a Piano Day? For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener.” – Nils Frahm

Piano Day, an annual worldwide event founded by a group of likeminded people, takes place on the 88th day of the year – in 2024 it’s the 28th March – because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated.

88.IV is the fourth piece Herne has created for Piano Day, all of which have strayed from the more traditional sounds and styles associated with the instrument in order to explore its unbound harmonic breadth.

Last years instalment was far more minimal and melodic than its predecessors, having a strong emphasis on the act of ‘Play’, using that as the main impetus in the writing of the piece. 88.IV is a far different beast, this time focusing on reductive systems and processing - stripping the sound of the piano down to a singular wave form and rebuilding from there.

The resulting sound is fierce and abrupt, with a central motif that could easily be mistaken for a synthesiser. 88.IV also strays from a more traditional linear feel in structure and construction, aiming to act more as a physical presence, optimised for a large speaker format, which has become a focus of Herne’s more recent works.



88.IV will be released on all digital platforms on March 28, 2023
